The Tragic Loss of Prof Alaa Fayez: It is with deep regret and sadness that we announce the tragic death of Prof Alaa Fayez in a car accident. Prof Alaa Fayez, who is a founding of member of our society, was an eminent pediatric liver transplant surgeon and the first elected President of Ain Shams University in Egypt. He was a great person and will be extremely missed by all of us who knew him. May Allah bless his soul and give his family courage and patience.

First Liver Transplant in Qatar: Surgeons at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) have performed the first deceased donor liver transplant in Qatar. The donor was a 48 yrs Filipino who died of a cerebral stroke; and the recipient was a 43 yrs Egyptian who had end-stage liver disease due to Hepatitis C virus. The procedure was uneventful and the patient was discharged on the 10th post-operative day. First Liver Transplant in Iraq: The first liver transplant in Iraq was performed at Zheen International Hospital in Erbil (Kurdistan Region) by Dr Assad Hassoun and his surgical team from San Francisco, CA. This was a living donor liver transplant for cryptogenic cirrhosis in a 21 year-old patient. More details...

Prof. Alaa Hamza, Prof. Refaat Kamel, and Prof. Hatem Khalaf were all granted honorary European Diploma in Transplantation Surgery by the Division of Transplantation of the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS) and the European Board of Surgery (EBS) which work in close collaboration with the European Society of Organ Transplantation (ESOT).
